OUR HISTORY

HISTORY OF THE WEST BROWARD CHURCH OF CHRIST

The West Broward Church of Christ campus is currently located on approximately nine acres just west of the intersection of Flamingo Road and Broward Blvd. at 12550 W. Broward Blvd., in beautiful Plantation, Florida. This area once everglades, is now thriving with city life.

The original congregation roots date back to 1925, with the first “meeting house” owned by the brothers located at 513 West Broward Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale.

In 1949 a single lot was purchased at the corner of 12th Street and South Andrews Avenue, downtown. The first church building was constructed in 1950. Additional property was purchased at various times. The old building was then torn down and replaced with a new facility. The Andrews Avenue Church of Christ, as it would be known for many years, was incorporated on February 20, 1964.

The church had Elders and Deacons first appointed in 1949. Past Elders included: James Johnson, Fred Johnson, Bob Loftis, William J. Booth, Fred Foster, Paul Fossler, Travis Roper, Felix Shepherd, Bob Burton, Les Bitting Sr., Robert Brooker and Paul Jordan. Past Deacons included: John Loftis, D.E. Stevenson, Lyle Crew, Harry Hudson, Edward Field, John Ellis, Bob Oler, Dorsey Maynard, Darwin Waters, and Paul J. Spicer.

A number of outstanding preachers served as Ministers of the Andrews Avenue Church of Christ including: George Hoover, V. P. Black, George Sweeney, R.E. Henson, George Hickey, Vincent Goshill, Max Johnson, Arlin Chapman, Robert Brewer, Lloyd Porter, Dalton Yates, Bill Watkin, Harold Savage, Mike George and Gary Davenport.

The community of Broward County exploded in population and construction of new homes and businesses grew westward. The church purchased acreage in Plantation and in 1994 moved into a new building at 12550 West Broward Blvd. where we meet today. A new name, West Broward Church of Christ, was taken to fit the new location. Pulpit Ministers who have served at this location in the past include: Gary Davenport, Bill Craddock and Bill Goodpasture. Since the original building project, additions have been made to add a second classroom building, in 2000, as well as a Youth Minister’s home, in 2004.

We are a group of non-denominational believers dedicated to being servants in the Lord’s church and to reaching our surrounding neighbors with His word. Our Preaching Minister, Terry Casey offers weekly lessons from God’s word that will lift your spirits, lighten your load, and help you and your family be joyful. “Love One Another” as Jesus said in John 13:34-35; 15:12-17; 1 Peter 1:22; 1 John 3:11, is practiced here. We hope you will make an opportunity to visit with us soon.
